Why haven't we seen a good pirate movie in so long? It's a genre that dropped off the map. And even though it provided some of the great epics of Hollywood's golden era - the kind that helped define the careers of Titans like Errol Flynn, Douglas Fairbanks and Tyrone Power - it hasn't been touched by a major studio, or by anyone, in what seems like an eternity. Call it a castaway, marooned on some remote, forgotten island on the far reach of Hollywood lore. But treasure never loses its luster. It just waits for someone to find it. It would take an independent film to rediscover the traditional pirate movie - and a gang of 'privateers,' who, like the characters they bring to life, had to sail headlong into this adventure under no flag but their own. The mission has proved just as thrilling, difficult and rewarding as any fresh prospect in the 'Rough and tumble' business of moviemaking. Read more --> |
