Pirates don't ride bikes.

So when it comes to filming a pirate movie, you'd better get the mode of transit right.

You need a ship.

Roush found a grand one (a full year before a slightly better-known director named Gore Verbinski enlisted her for a project of his own) - The Lady Washington.

Although it serves as the namesake of the treasure ship - Maelstrom, not to mention every ship she does battle with, her real name is the Lady Washington. She's a full-scale reproduction of the original Lady Washington, which was the first American vessel to visit the West Coast of North America, and appears as her predecessor did in 1790. She is owned by the Grays Harbor Historical Seaport Authority of Washington State, although several governments within the state hold interests in the ship.

The Maelstrom crew spent several days filming her both in port and under sail, and enlisted the aid of dozens of her actual crew members for the filming of The Maelstrom trailer.
